Georgia: Kartli

Chinuri is an indigenous white grape variety from the Kartli region of central Georgia (also found in Kakheti and parts of Imereti). Its name is sometimes tied to the old Georgian “chini” (a reddish-green hue) or the word “chinebuli” (“excellent”). It is prized for its high natural acidity and versatility in producing both still and sparkling wines.

• Appearance: Chinuri wines are typically pale straw to light gold, with brighter hues in stainless steel fermentation. Traditional qvevri styles develop deeper amber or golden tones with age.
• Aromas & Flavors: Fresh styles show aromas of green apple, pear, citrus, and meadow flowers, often with herbal or minty undertones. In qvevri or aged expressions, richer notes of dried apricot, honey, and subtle spice emerge.
• Style & Structure: Light to medium-bodied with crisp acidity and moderate alcohol. In modern stainless steel fermentation, it remains lively and clean, while qvevri aging adds texture, minerality, and subtle tannic grip. It is also a key variety in Georgian sparkling wine production due to its freshness.
