Bagrat Gakharia & Giorgi Gegelia

Learn More:

Georgia: Imereti
Excellent with grilled lamb, beef stews, game, or hearty Georgian dishes like chakapuli and ostri. Its natural acidity also complements earthy mushrooms and aged cheeses.

Otskhanuri Sapere is an indigenous red grape variety from western Georgia, primarily grown in the Imereti region and occasionally in Racha-Lechkhumi. Its name means “the colorful one from Otskhana,” referring to the village where it originated. Regarded as one of Georgia’s most characterful and ageworthy reds, Otskhanuri Sapere produces wines of striking depth, structure, and individuality.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby to dark garnet in color, often displaying purple highlights when young. With age or traditional qvevri fermentation, the hue can evolve toward brick or mahogany tones.
  • Aromas & Flavors: Intense notes of sour cherry, pomegranate, black plum, and wild berries layered with hints of spice, herbs, and forest floor. Mature or qvevri-aged examples reveal deeper nuances of leather, tobacco, and dark chocolate.
  • Style & Structure: Medium to full-bodied with firm tannins and pronounced acidity, Otskhanuri Sapere wines are built for aging. Stainless steel and oak versions show precision and brightness, while qvevri styles add earthy depth and textural complexity.
  • Character: Otskhanuri Sapere expresses the soul of western Georgia—bold, structured, and deeply colored. It combines rustic strength with refined aromatics, delivering wines that age gracefully and reward patience.
