Georgia: Samegrelo
Semi-sweet Ojaleshi pairs beautifully with spiced Georgian dishes, game birds, lamb, and aged cheeses. Dry versions complement roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and dark chocolate desserts.

Ojaleshi is an indigenous red grape variety from western Georgia, primarily grown in the Samegrelo region along the banks of the Enguri River. The name “Ojaleshi” means “grows on a tree,” reflecting its historical cultivation method, where vines climbed trees in lush, humid vineyards. Known for its natural semi-sweet character and fragrant complexity, Ojaleshi produces wines of exceptional charm and depth.

  • Appearance: Ojaleshi wines are deep ruby to dark garnet, often with a vibrant violet rim when young. In qvevri or aged expressions, the color matures toward pomegranate and brick hues.
  • Aromas & Flavors: Expect alluring aromas of blackberry, cherry, wild strawberry, and plum, balanced by hints of rose petal, spice, and gentle forest herbs. Naturally semi-sweet examples show velvety red fruit richness, while dry styles emphasize minerality and freshness.
  • Style & Structure: Typically medium-bodied with soft tannins, moderate alcohol, and bright acidity. The traditional semi-sweet style achieves harmony between fruit sweetness and lively structure, while dry or qvevri versions reveal greater complexity and earthy depth.
  • Character: Ojaleshi embodies the romantic, aromatic side of Georgian winemaking—luscious yet balanced, expressive yet refined. Its floral perfume and silky texture make it one of the most distinctive and captivating red wines from western Georgia.
